Job Summary

The length of your internship will be dependent on the program requirements of your master's degree internship.

This position works in DEED's Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) division, which empowers Minnesotans with disabilities to achieve their goals for competitive, integrated employment and career development. You'll be part of, and contribute to, a lively and energetic team with a positive internal culture. Under the guidance and direction of Intern Supervisor(s) as assigned, the Counseling Intern will work with Vocational Rehabilitation participants by learning and performing all duties of a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. The duties of the Counseling Intern shall include but are not limited to conducting assessments, developing an employment plan, and providing guidance and follow-up services that help the individual successfully obtain and maintain employment. Under the guidance and direction of the assigned Intern Supervisor, this position will identify intensive and necessary services for both transition age youth and adults through the coordination and provision of services within VRS policy and procedures. This position will help identify community resources for success in employment.

VRS has offices across the State of Minnesota.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

To receive credit for your education and experience, your resume should clearly describe how you meet each minimum and/or preferred qualification listed, including dates of employment.

To be eligible for an appointment as a Student Worker Para Professional Senior, you must be enrolled in a Master's program in Rehabilitation Counseling.

Students may be "off" for the summer or for one (1) semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one (1) semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution, you must carry at least six (6) semester/ nine (9) quarter credits. If you are enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one (1) that only offers one (1) credit per class, you must be taking two (2) or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two (2) courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in:
  • Providing employment related services for persons with disabilities (i.e., job placement, special education work coordinator or case manager, case aide/paraprofessional).
  • Working with youth and/or adults with disabilities.
  • Providing career exploration and planning and/or employment related services.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with diverse populations such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and Native American individuals.

Ability to communicate in a second language (specifically Deaf and Hard of Hearing-American Sign Language, Somali, Hmong, or Spanish).
