General Purpose

Provides technical leadership on the most complex and business critical engineering projects. Facilitates internal training for engineers and technicians. Develops presentations for senior management and recommends and implements changes to benefit the company. Develops engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s generation, transmission, distribution, telecommunication, or other utility facilities/systems.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include the following, depending on level:

Boiler Tube Failure Reduction:
• Investigate, report and document every tube failure that occurs within the thermal fleet. Includes necessary analysis to determine failure mechanism and root cause. Record results in company tube failure database
• Support plant based boiler groups to identify and implement actions plans including inspections, repairs and replacements during forced and scheduled outages.
• This position will work very closely with others assigned to help improve Cycle Chemistry issues at the plant locations as it relates to boiler tube failure reduction.
• Responsible for coordinating with the appropriate generation support staff to provide the necessary budget and on-going training requirements to support implementation of the BTF/CCI program.
High Energy Piping
• Oversee the fleet high energy piping inspection program. In conjunction with site personnel, this includes inspection scope development, coordinating with inspection service providers, inspection and repair tracking, providing recommendations and support as required.
• Interface with service providers including metallurgical analysis, piping stress analysis and coupon testing.
• Provide technical support to plant personnel, procurement and other groups on bid specifications for welding contractor services and high energy piping inspection services.
Code Compliance
• Working with the appropriate corporate based personnel, support the requirements of PacifiCorp’s R Program, OUI Program and VR program.
• Working with the plant based Code Compliance Coordinators; provide oversight and technical support for proper implementation of the company’s welding R program quality standards.
• Provide support to company employees tasked with conducting UPV inspections.
General
• Support other groups and entities within the Berkshire Hathaway Energy company as requested.
• Position will be responsible to develop and maintain working relationships with outside providers of equipment and/or technical services relating to welding service providers and advanced NDE providers, authorized inspection agencies.
• Monitor all aspects of programs and defined projects against planned deliverables including scope, budget, actual costs and schedules.
• Act as a lead/expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians and craftsmen.

Requirements

The Requirements for the Sr. Engineer II level include:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college/university
• A minimum of 6 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including experience with boiler tubes. Within the last few years, activities with boiler tube failure reduction is helpful..
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, evaluate and apply problem-solving skills and root cause analysis related to the operation, maintenance and life-assessment aspects of high energy piping.
• The successful candidate will be expected to take and pass the National Board training required to obtain an In-Service commission and R endorsement.
• Must be physically capable to inspect boilers and other utility pressure vessels including crawling into confined spaces and to bend or stoop for extended periods of time.
• Must have a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Note: Prior to an offer of employment, the company may request an official driving record.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, evaluate and apply problem-solving skills and root cause analysis related to the operation, maintenance and life-assessment aspects of high energy piping.
• Must be physically capable to inspect boilers and other utility pressure vessels including crawling into confined spaces and to bend or stoop for extended periods of time.
• Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
• Expert knowledge and application of principles in area of engineering specialty. Understanding of the Company’s business and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws regulations and electrical codes, relating to the use, construction, installation, and repair of pressure retaining items.
• Knowledge of the techniques used to fabricate, install, operate, maintain and repair pressure retaining items.
• Knowledge of unsafe pressure vessel conditions, and the required corrective measures necessary to establish and maintain safe conditions.
• Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team member, to maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
• Understanding of company’s business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
• Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
• Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.

In addition to the above, Requirements for a Principal level include:

• A minimum of 10 - 15 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, including experience performing highly technical work of a specialized nature. Within the last five (5) years, experience with the oversight of advanced best practice activities for boiler tube failure reduction, is desired.
