Job Summary

The temporary position of Infectious Disease American Indian Liaison supports the mission of MDH to protect, maintain and improve the health of all Minnesotans. The Infectious Disease American Indian Liaison supports and advises on collaboration between American Indian tribes and communities and the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control Division (IDEPC) to prevent and respond to infectious disease and promote the health of American Indians in Minnesota. This position is in the Infectious Disease Equity and Engagement unit and supports American Indian communities in ways contribute to the health and well-being of American Indians in Minnesota. Collaboration with other equity focused staff, colleagues working with tribes and urban indigenous communities, appropriate grant and contract managers, and specific disease teams will be critical. Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide consultation and support to American Indian tribes and communities, IDEPC, local public health and other key partners on initiative related to preventing and responding to infectious disease impacting American Indians in Minnesota.
  • Deliver public health information to tribes and American Indian partners in a variety of accessible, relevant ways.
  • Promote collaboration and coordination, strengthen the capacity of IDEPC to work with American Indian tribes and communities, and enhance the cultural relevance and effectiveness of infectious disease prevention strategies.
  • Partner with tribes and communities to educate IDEPC, local public health, and other key partners about structural racism, inequities and other factors contributing to disproportionate burdens of infectious disease, as well as equitable and culturally relevant approaches to maintaining health and well-being and preventing infectious disease.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

An associate degree may be substituted for six (6) months of experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. A master's degree may be substituted for one and a half (1.5) years of experience. To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

Two (2) years of experience in the following areas:
  • Project coordination, program management, and/or health education and promotion.
  • Experience engaging with American Indian tribes and communities.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate in a clear, concise, effective manner.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience establishing and maintaining working relationships and facilitating oral and written communication with internal and external stakeholders on public health matters.
  • Experience providing training and technical assistance to health programs and/or interpretation of policies and procedures and federal and state regulations.
  • Experience gaining support and cooperation in developing and implementing infectious disease prevention and response initiatives.
  • Experience setting short-term and long-term objectives, including facilitating communication, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Experience designing, producing, and evaluating the effectiveness of health promotion approaches, materials, training and technical assistance through qualitative analysis of stakeholder needs.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining working relationships within the agency, state, local public health, and other key partners, translating data and technical knowledge into public health policy and practice.
  • Experience working with American Indian tribes and communities in a public health setting.
  • Educational background in public health.
