Job Summary

Help make an impact on the health of Minnesotans! The Injury and Violence Prevention Section (IVPS) of the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease (HPCD) Division seeks an Injury and Violence Epidemiology (IVE) Unit Supervisor. This position will provide supervision, planning, implementation, direction and evaluation of the IVE unit. The IVE unit focuses on violence and injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, motor vehicle injury, and falls, and attends to the underlying contributing causes. The unit staff seek to understand and prevent the inequities the data reveal.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Collaboration with related activities and programs conducted by other internal and external agencies.
  • Supervision of unit staff.
  • Budget oversite.
  • Development and management of follow-up studies to better understand root causes of and community solutions for TBI, human trafficking, sexual violence, homicide, suicide, and motor vehicle crashes.
  • Evaluation of injury and violence-related data sets to determine suitability for ongoing surveillance analysis.
  • Presentation of program findings to varied audiences and publications.

Work may be conducted in-person in St. Paul, or as telework for applicants who reside in MN, IA, WI, ND, or SD, based on the business needs of the unit and supervisor discretion. Position location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of the closest Minnesota Department of Health district office location. Attendance to in person quarterly meetings in St. Paul is required and there will be additional periodic requirements in office based on the business needs of the unit.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Four years professional experience as an Epidemiologist. Experience to include all of the following:
  • Planning, leading, or managing projects as a Lead Epidemiologist.
  • Designing and conducting injury and violence surveillance investigations and data analysis, including identifying and describing disparities.
  • Interpreting federal and state laws pertaining to state and local public health programs.
  • Publishing work in peer-reviewed and professional publications.

A degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or closely related field may substitute for experience as described above:
  • Master's = 18 months
  • Doctorate = 24 months

Abilities, skills and knowledge to be assessed at interview:
  • Knowledge of general nature and objectives of statewide public health programs.
  • Knowledge of and strategies for injury and violence surveillance and analysis of data collected.
  • Public speaking and writing abilities sufficient to provide professional consultation on injury and violence control issues.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to maintain project organization, develop partnerships, and suitably negotiate as situations arise.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in injury and violence etiology activities particularly as they relate to state public health programs.
  • Experience providing direction to staff conducting surveillance activities reportable to public health.
  • Experience initiating and implementing policies and procedures as they relate to accomplishing the objectives of the MDH.
  • Ability to gain support and cooperation in developing and conducting public health programs.
  • Experience writing funding proposals and developing budgets to support the work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience managing conflict in a collaborative way reaching mutually acceptable positive solutions .

Additional Requirements

• Must successfully pass a background and reference check.

• This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand occasional travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.

• The successful candidate under U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services regulations must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins. The agency is unable to offer H-1B sponsorship.
