The director is an innovator using strategy and implementation science to achieve excellence in empirical outcomes associated with nursing and interprofessional practice. The director brings expert knowledge and experience to integrating evidence-based & research practices, magnet principles, and leadership & change approaches into the work and practice environments.

The director collaborates with the executive leadership in developing and disseminating innovations related to nurse engagement, governance and professional development and patient-centered outcomes, additionally the director ensures adherence to professional standards, regulatory requirements, bargaining unit agreements, hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management.

Leader Role

  • In collaboration with the executive team, integrates professional values and practices into strategic and operational objectives.
  • Demonstrates leadership practices that influence others to achieve the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of Patient Care Services and OHSU.
  • Establishes shared goals based on organizational and nursing strategic plan in collaboration with leaders, staff and other stakeholders.
  • Establishes evidence-based leadership practices that promote desired behaviors and outcomes.
  • Develops systems and strategies for progressive leadership development and succession planning.
  • Communicates and models professional practice behaviors within Patient Care Services and across disciplines
  • Provides strategic direction to enhance closed loop communication and learning across the organization
  • Contributes to nursing knowledge by conducting or synthesizing research that discovers, examines, and evaluates knowledge, theories, criteria, and creative approaches to improve healthcare practice.
  • Promotes knowledge and skill in change/innovation, safety science and research strategies.
  • Identifies opportunities to generate and use research related to professional development, knowledge transfer, and professional practice in pursuit of excellent clinical outcomes.
  • Formally disseminates research findings to internal and external audiences by making presentations, publishing, consultating, and supporting journal clubs.
  • Facilitates the utilization, conduct, and dissemination of research
  • Supports development and implementation of hiring practices that reinforce professional practice.
  • Oversees development of professional practice in new hires; develops and reinforces professional practice via knowledge, skills and attitude development of all nurses at all levels.
  • Particpates with the Professional Practice Role Board members in peer review of nurse leaders’ evaluation of individual nurse practice variations using professional and legal standards and applying Just Cause principles
  • Leads to enhance patient-centered care through interdisciplinary activities, such professional development events, co-design of patient processes, and technological development that cross the continuum, or research opportunities
  • Partners with formal and clinical nurses leaders to develop, monitor and improve professional governance.
  • Manages leader and staff performance through progressive development and actions to advance a culture that embraces a Learning Organization.
  • Utilizes current research findings and other evidence to expand clinical knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of professional issues
  • Engages in self-assessment in role accountability
  • Advances own skills and knowledge in areas of responsibility including the arts and science of nursing, change in healthcare systems, and application of emerging technologies.
  • Advances excellence by communicating a clear and consistent message about the expectations for role and standards-based practice.
  • Develops an infrastructure, and allocates resources to create a professional practice environment.
  • Develops and presents relevant information, education, and/or training to other health care providers and/or the community as appropriate.
  • Develops and expands the team’s intellectual capacity through mentoring and opportunities for professional growth and development
  • As appropriate, submits abstracts or articles for professional presentations or publication.
  • Role models professionalism and participation in activities such as nursing organizations, the community, and agencies that shape health care policies and practices.
  • Engages in informal and formal processes of giving and seeking feedback regarding role performance from individuals, professional colleagues, representatives, administrators, and others.
  • Ensures human resources are available to meet development, monitoring and implementing professional practice programs
  • Promotes value-based evaluation of nursing practice and programs promoting top of license practice.
  • Evaluates team members’ achievement toward financial performance targets.
  • Assesses and evaluates overall needs and resources needed to meet goals on an annual basis.
  • Provides oversight in the budgeting process by supporting the planning, acquisition and allocation of resources


BSN or higher degree in nursing.

Master’s degree in related field

Five (5) years of work experience in implementing nursing professional practice model And Five (5) years recent related management/leadership experience.

Professional certification in nursing leadership-Nurse Executive/Administrator within 2 years of assuming the role.

Unencumered Oregon RN license

Strong communication skills, teamwork (demonstrated ability to coordinate team and integrate existing teams), and experience in complex organizational environments. Ability to integrate units and managers not typically working together.

  • Recent experience as a director of professional practice.
